Hale Cook 2013: The Future Starts Here

As we have shared with you in recent emails, Friends of Hale Cook has been working closely with the Kansas City Public School District (“District”) leadership over the past few months to review our proposal to open Hale Cook. The District has carefully considered several options – including timing of reopening the building and the impact on other District schools. We now have their support to reopen Hale Cook and are going to proceed with enrollment for Fall 2013.

The Future Starts with Three Classrooms.

The District will start enrolling students in Kindergarten (two classes) and First Grade (one class) for Year One this week. As the District is committed to providing each student with the highest standard facilities, the students of Hale Cook will be hosted temporarily off-site (and close-by) while the building undergoes renovations and important upgrades for the safety and welfare of our children. As soon as we have filled the spots to reopen Hale Cook, the District will develop a construction schedule and estimated timeline to move-in to the building. Friends of Hale Cook is confident that this will provide our students with the best environment possible in the future while providing us with access to many resources we might not have otherwise with only three classrooms.

What do I do next?

If you are interested in enrolling your child, please do so as soon as possible! Complete this enrollment form and drop it off at Hartman Elementary (8111 Oak Street). We are organizing a meeting with Dr. Green and a tour of our temporary location in March 2013 and will be issuing a Frequently Asked Questions document late next week.

What if my child will not be in Kindergarten or First Grade in Fall 2013?

The School District is looking at a potential Pre-K operator that may co-locate in the building but for now we are unable to offer this program. Some of you may remember our earliest campaign to reopen the school which required a very large commitment from the community in year one – this current approach is much more practical and our feasibility study suggests we have the numbers we would need to fill these classrooms very quickly.

If you have more than one child but all children may not be in these two grades, please let us know. We will continue to work closely with the District and will advise them of your situation.

Enroll today!

If you have been considering Hale Cook, please enroll your child as soon as possible. As soon as the spots have been filled, we will be able to build a schedule for renovating the building and start hiring teachers. The enrollment form is available here: http://www.kcpublicschools.org/enrollment

For privacy reasons, Friends of Hale Cook will not have access to the enrollment forms or any of the contact information for those who have decided to enroll. Please let us know if you plan to send your child to attend Hale Cook in Fall 2013 and we will make sure we keep in touch – we will be organizing a series of information and planning sessions in the coming months as we build the necessary programming for Year One.

Once you have enrolled, please let us know by completing this form.

Stay Connected!

Of course, we will be hosting a series of events over the next few weeks and encourage you to get involved. Here is a quick calendar of upcoming events – more details are coming and will be provided in future emails and on our website.

  • Coffee with Friends of Hale Cook: Join us on Saturday, February 16, 8AM at Coffee Girls for a casual information session. We will have about an hour to answer your questions, whenever possible. Most importantly, this will help us give a list of questions to the District for their consideration. Come help us!
  • Brookside St. Patrick’s Day Parade Planning: Join us on Sunday, February 24, 4PM at the Tap Room as we plan a super-fantastic float for the upcoming parade. No float-building experience necessary to participate.
  • Open House at Hale Cook: TBC – If you haven’t had a chance to see the building, this will be a great opportunity to get a tour of the facilities and hear directly from District administrators about next steps for Hale Cook. Even if we are unable to get a tour of the building, we are excited that Dr. Green will be hosting a meeting to answer your questions directly. More details to come!
  • Open House at Off-Site Facility: March 2013 – You’ll get a chance to see the temporary classroom environments for the three Hale Cook classes and meet with the interim principal.
  • Potential Teacher Information Session: TBC – We will be inviting parents, children and potential teachers to join us for a conversation about our school vision.
  • St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Join us on Saturday, March 16 and show your school spirit! We have reserved a spot in this year’s parade and welcome you, future students, alumni and community supporters to march with us in the parade.

There are a lot of TBC above but we will provide you with an update as soon as possible as we flush out the details of these meetings. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any questions and remember that all of our events are always kid-friendly.

Information published here is as accurate as possible – details will be completely flushed out with the District in the next week or so and a Frequently Asked Questions will be made available. Thank you for your patience and interest!
