As part of our effort to enliven the Hale Cook campus, we created a community garden and butterfly maze. We have a Memorandum of Understanding with the School District to maintain this garden for the foreseeable future.

Butterfly Maze

We were lucky to get many donations of flowers and butterfly bushes from neighbors, including Powell Gardens and have very supportive neighbors who have given countless Saturday mornings to make our vision BLOOM. We couldn’t do it without you!

In addition to preparing the site for the maze, planting sunflowers and annuals to prepare the ground for more native plants, we have also planted a few sweet potatoes as part of the Kansas City Sweet Potato Project.

A special thank you to Holly Rachel for her design of the butterfly maze plan which has provided us with the initial vision for this year’s garden.

Community Garden

In the spirit of building partnerships with other organizations, Friends of Hale Cook has teamed with the Greater Kansas City Community Gardens and Giving Grove to apply for a Legacy grant from the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Centurions Leadership Program. Our project was selected and the grant provided our three organizations with hundreds of volunteer hours and funds to develop an edible forest and raised bed garden on the campus. Food harvested from the trees, shrubs and raised beds will be donated to food pantries as part of our commitment to providing an educational and community-focused environment both indoors and outdoors at Hale Cook Elementary.

The project was completed in Fall 2012 and since that time has produced a wide variety of vegetables and a great learning experience for Hale Cook Elementary students!

How can you get involved?

We are always looking for community support to not only maintain the garden, but to donate tools and resources to help us make this into something educational and beautiful for years to come. Please let us know if you have anything you think would help us with any of our efforts around the campus.

If you’re interested in volunteering or are interested in adopting one of our garden beds for $50, please email Board Member, Susan Stocking at¬†
